The puppets are attached to long bamboo poles which always stay submerged. Essentially, the pool / stage has a separate compartment behind the scenery, and all of the performers stay within that compartment. The puppets are made with different shapes and role depending to suit the play. Vietnamese water puppetry uses a clever technique to hide the performer and all of the puppet controls: a big pool of waist-high water. Over centuries of forming and developing, water puppetry has become typical form of art performance in the North. On the performance, the puppets are controlled by the puppeteers to mover over the water.
